Realizing a years-long relocation plan, the new museum opened its doors on Main the Donald W. More than 2.1 million children and adults visited the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum. Over the years, the museum developed into a critical community asset that complemented and enhanced the educational experience of the children living in Southern Nevada and was regularly recognized for award-winning exhibits and programs. A bond issue authorizing the building of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library and Discovery Museum in 1985 gave the museum a permanent home, which opened its doors to the public on September 9, 1990. The museum’s co-founders, Robin Greenspun and Mark Tratos, arranged a partnership between the Junior League of Las Vegas and the Allied Arts Council founding a private, nonprofit educational institution in 1984. The expansive glass allows ample natural light into the space while also giving passers-by a preview of the whimsical exhibits inside."Prior to opening its doors in a new location – Symphony Park and with a new name – DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, Lied Discovery Children’s Museum was located in the historic Cultural Corridor in Downtown Las Vegas. Playfully patterned brick work surrounds the building’s signature glass opening above the primary entrance. Deco detailing tops cast-stone banding around the building’s base, visually connecting the Museum to Boman Pavilion to the north. The museum’s massing, fenestration and exterior details are designed with intentionally similarities to those of Reynolds Hall and Boman Pavilion as the museum forms the southern boundary of The Smith Center’s courtyard. The Discovery Children’s Museum, like the other two venues on the campus, was planned and designed to achieve LEED Certification or better. The museum itself became fully operational and open to the public a year later. The Discovery Children’s Museum’s exterior was completed in time for the opening of the adjacent Reynolds Hall and Boman Pavilion in March 2012. We provided design services for the museum’s core and shell exterior. The museum is housed in a new, purpose-built facility on the Center’s southwest corner. The Discovery Children’s Museum was relocated to its new home upon completion of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
